The UMass Minutemen and the George Washington Colonials meet in college basketball action from the Capital One Arena on Thursday night.

The UMass Minutemen come into the conference tournament as the #10 seed, finishing the year with an overall record of 14-16 overall including a 7-11 mark in A-10 play this season. Noah Fernandes leads the Minutemen in scoring and assists with 14 PPG and 5.2 APG in addition to 2.8 RPG while Rich Kelly has 12.7 PPG with 3.2 APG. Trent Buttrick has 10.8 PPG and 6.1 RPG and C.J. Kelly has 10.3 PPG with 4.3 RPG to round out the group of double-digit scorers for UMASS so far this season. T.J. Weeks Jr. also has 9.4 PPG with 4.8 RPG as well on the year. As a team, UMASS is averaging 75 PPG on 42.9% shooting from the field, 37.3% from three and 75.6% from the foul line while allowing 77.8 PPG on 48.3% shooting from the field and 37.5% from three this season.

The George Washington Colonials enter the conference tournament as the #7 seed, finishing the year at 12-17 including 8-9 in conference play. James Bishop leads GW in scoring with 16.8 PPG while Joe Bamisile has 16 PPG with 5 RPG to make up the pair of double-digit scorers for GW so far this season. Brendan Adams has 8.1 PPG while Ricky Lindo Jr. has 7.7 PPG with a team-high 7.7 RPG and Brayon Freeman has 9.9 PPG and 3.6 APG as well to lead the Colonials so far this season. As a team, George Washington is averaging 67.7 PPG on 42.5% shooting from the field, 33.4% from three and 69.3% from the foul line while allowing 71.9 PPG on 44% shooting from the field and 30.2% from three this season.

UMass is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 neutral site games. George Washington is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a loss and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 neutral site games as an underdog.

I get the allure of backing GW here as I think the Colonials have taken steps forward this year after I didn’t really expect much from GW this season. However, despite the fact that GW has covered nine straight meetings with UMass, I think the line favoring UMass is just really telling. UMass is much more consistent offensively, and while the defense can be an issue, I think the Minutemen do enough to cover this number and get the win in the process.
