The Alcorn State Braves and the Gonzaga Bulldogs meet Monday in college basketball action from McCarthey Athletic Center. Alcorn State stumbles into this one at 0-3 so far following losses in their first trio. As for Gonzaga, they’re 2-0 so far after wins versus Dixie State and Texas. Alcorn State started slow in the first half of their opener versus Washington State, and ultimately lost 85-67. In game two, the Braves got closer but still came up with a loss. That one ended up 69-66 against Seattle following another tepid first half.
In their most recent outing, Alcorn State played Portland on Saturday. The Braves scored just 18 points in the first half, and despite 40 points from there Alcorn lost 62-58. Byron Joshua was the top scorer with 20 points and three rebounds.
Over on the Gonzaga side, their first game came versus Dixie State last Tuesday. The Bulldogs were in complete control for most of the game and eventually came out on top 97-63. Julian Strawther (17 points; 10 boards) and Chet Holmgren (14 points; 13 rebounds) both doubled up.
Game two against Texas was a tougher test for Gonzaga and they passed with flying colors. The Bulldogs held a 47-27 advantage at halftime and cruised to an 86-74 win. Drew Timme went off in that one for 37 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Gonzaga is 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight Monday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up win. The under is 5-1 in the Bulldogs’ last six Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Braves are 4-1 ATS in their last five Monday games and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up loss. Alcorn State is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Gonzaga, but staying away. This line is going to be very thick just about everywhere. That said, it’s tough to doubt the Bulldogs right now. Gonzaga shot 54.2 percent from the field against a very good Texas team. Though they were out-rebounded 33-32, Gonzaga held an 11-7 turnover advantage and shot well from the line (15-of-17). There’s no reason why the Bulldogs shouldn’t completely dominate this game. The question is whether or not Alcorn State will be able to eke out a cover in garbage time. We’ll see.
