Michigan State posted a 23-13 overall record last year with a 11-9 mark in a competitive Big Ten Conference. The Spartans landed in seventh place with that effort, and ultimately made it to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
In their first game of the year versus Northern Arizona, the Spartans got off to a 14-point halftime lead. Michigan State finished strong for a 73-55 win. Tops in scoring was Joey Hauser with a double-double on 18 points and 10 boards.
Over on the Gonzaga side, they had a pretty good run last year but didn’t go all the way. The Bulldogs were 28-4 overall and 13-1 in the WCC. Gonzaga won the regular season and tournament championships, but lost in the Sweet Sixteen round of the national tourney.
Gonzaga got off to a good start on Monday in their first matchup versus North Florida. The Bulldogs scored 53 points in the first and 51 more from there in a 104-63 blowout. Drew Timme put up 22 points, and Julian Strawther added 16 more.
The Spartans are 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral-site games and 4-1 ATS in their last five Friday games. The Bulldogs are 6-2 ATS in their last eight Friday games and 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven overall.
PICK: I’m leaning Gonzaga in this one. Should be a really fun matchup regardless, though. The Bulldogs took care of business in their blowout win Monday. six different players had double-digit points, and the team shot very well at 63.2 percent from the field. As for Michigan State, they were pretty solid in their opener as well, with 44.6 percent shooting and 46 rebounds. This is going to be a tough challenge for the Spartans though, and I don’t know if they can keep the pace.
