The Texas Longhorns and the Gonzaga Bulldogs meet Saturday in college basketball action from McCarthey Athletic Center. Texas managed a big win over Houston Baptist to kick off the season at 1-0. As for Gonzaga, they started the year with a victory as well, taking out Dixie State on Tuesday. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Texas had a good run in a tough Big 12 last year, finishing 19-8 overall and 11-6 in conference play for a third-place finish. The Longhorns took out Texas Tech and Oklahoma State on the way to the Big 12 Tournament title, but lost to Abilene Christian in the First Round of the national tournament.
Texas got off to a good start in the opener versus Houston Baptist, logging 43 points in the first half and 49 more in the second during a 92-48 blowout victory. The Longhorns’ leading scorer was Courtney Ramey with 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Gonzaga side, they nearly had a perfect season last year, finishing 31-1 overall and 15-0 in WCC play. The Bulldogs ran the table in the conference tournament, then won five games on the way to the National Championship where they lost to Baylor.
Gonzaga put an exclamation point on their win versus Dixie State, scoring 57 points in the second half during a 97-63 win. Julian Strawther led the team with 17 points and 10 boards, while Chet Holmgren also doubled up on 14 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.
Gonzaga is 5-2 ATS in their last seven Saturday games and the under is 4-1 in their last five overall. The under is 4-1 in the Bulldogs’ last five at home.
Meanwhile, the Longhorns are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall. Texas is 2-5 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to try Texas. This one’s something of a difficult call however, as we’ve only seen these teams on the floor in a pair of relatively easy matchups. Texas had six players in double-figures during their win over Houston Baptist, shooting a ridiculous 64 percent from the floor and 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from 3-point range. They’re not going to have it so easy here, though.
As for Gonzaga, they shot 54.4 percent from the field in their opener with a tepid 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) made from 3-point range. The rebounding (45) and assists (23) were great as expected, however. All in all this should be an awesome early-season matchup, and I think the Longhorns can push for a cover.
