Texas Southern had a couple of tricky matchups in their first two games this year. The Tigers lost to San Francisco 90-77 in their opener, then 78-54 to Texas Tech. Texas Southern got a win in game three, 67-66 in a dramatic matchup versus Arizona State.
In the Tuesday game versus Oral Roberts, Texas Southern had a decent first half and went into the locker room tied 38-38. The Tigers managed just 26 points in the second for an 82-64 defeat.
Over on the Houston side, they haven’t had much trouble at all through three games so far. The Cougars rolled past Northern Colorado in the opener with an 83-36 result. Likewise for game two versus Saint Joseph’s: Houston managed an 81-55 win in that one.
On Monday versus Oral Roberts, the Cougars jumped out to a 51-24 halftime lead. Houston continued to keep the pressure on in the second during an 83-45 victory. Tops in scoring was Tramon Mark with 23 points, and Marcus Sasser added 19 points of his own.
PICK: I’m likely going to stick with Houston. The Cougars haven’t shown too many weaknesses in their three games so far this year, but to be fair they haven’t exactly faced elite competition yet either. Houston shot a nice 51.7 percent from the field with 52 rebounds in their win over Oral Roberts, holding the opposition to just 22.6 percent shooting. Texas Southern probably isn’t going to put up much of a fight either, so this cover opportunity should come down to when exactly Houston brings out their deep bench players during mop-up time in the second half.
