The Coppin State Eagles and the Howard Bison meet Monday in college basketball action from Burr Gymnasium. Here’s a Howard vs Coppin State prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Howard vs Coppin State pick.

Coppin State Eagles Betting Preview

Coppin State came into the 2024-25 season on a rough losing streak, but the team has played slightly better since late December. The Eagles dropped a dozen straight right out of the gate. Those losses came at the hands of Wake Forest, High Point, Rider, Virginia, UMBC, Miami, George Mason, Saint Joseph’s, Loyola MD, Wagner, NC State and Penn State in succession. Coppin State would go 2-2 over their next four outings, taking much-needed wins over Navy and North Carolina Central. The losses otherwise in that time came versus Georgetown and South Carolina State, leaving the Eagles with a dismal 2-14 record over their first 16 outings.

In the Norfolk State matchup on Saturday, Coppin State was in trouble by halftime, sporting a 53-32 deficit at the break. The Eagles didn’t end up getting any closer than that on a 39-37 second-half run and lost 92-69 in blowout fashion. Tops in scoring during the defeat was Toby Nnadozie with 15 points, two rebounds, three steals and three assists. Jonathan Dunn added 13 points with three boards and two assists alongside one steal. Peter Oduro put pu 12 points with six assists in 34 minutes of work, and Khali Horton chipped in six points with four rebounds and a pair of steals in 23 minutes of work on the court off the bench.

Howard Bison Betting Preview

Over on the Howard side, they’ve had some similar troubles in the win column this year—just not quite as severe. The Bison went 3-2 over their first five games, but quickly fell back below .500 on the year. The wins in that time came versus Dillard, Tennessee State and Florida International. The losses were against Kansas and Missouri. A 2-7 run came next with wins over only Virginia-Lynchburg and UNC Wilmington alongside losses to Boston U, UMBC, Mount St. Mary’s, Cincinnati, Drexel, Hampton and Yale. Howard was able to stop the bleeding last weekend with a win over Delaware State for a 6-9 run over their first 15 outings of the year.

Matched up against Morgan State over the weekend, the Bison were looking good by halftime on a nice 50-33 edge. Howard got a bit listless in the second half however, getting outscored 62-50 from there in a 100-95 victory in the end. Marcus Dockery led the team in scoring during the win with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists. Blake Harper added 23 points with six assists and seven rebounds. Anwar Gill put up 14 options with six assists and a pair of boards, while Miles Stewart came off the bench to provide 13 points and four rebounds.

Why the Howard Bison will win

  • Coppin State has lost each of its last 17 night games.
  • Howard has won nine of its last 10 games against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
  • Howard has won the first half in each of its last seven night games against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference at Burr Gymnasium.

Howard vs Coppin State Prediction

I’m leaning toward Howard. The Bison got off to a great first half in their latest win over Morgan State, eventually shooting 60.3 percent from the field and a nice 9-of-12 (75 percent) from outside. Howard did cough up 13 turnovers for 10 Bears points however, and gave up a whopping 62 points in the second half, but everything worked out well in the end with another W. That makes an even 100 points in each of the last two games for the Bison, who had been below 68 points in three straight losses prior to that. Howard has 75 or more points in all seven of their wins so far this year, and 88 or more in six of those.

As for Coppin State, they’ve been scoring well lately with 68 or more points in three of the last five games (a 2-3 run). The Eagles are coughing up a lot of points on the other side however, so Howard should have plenty of scoring opportunities in this one. I like the Bison to power it out.
