Northern Arizona was just 2-6 after eight games this year, beating only Benedictine Mesa and UCSB. The Lumberjacks went 2-3 in their next five games with losses to Pepperdine, Utah Valley and Southern Utah.
Matched up against Southern Utah back on December 17, the Lumberjacks scored 41 points in the first half and 51 more in the second but still lost it 106-101 in overtime. Northern Arizona’s Jalen Cone put up 45 points in the losing effort.
Over on the Idaho State side, they started the year at 1-6 with a lone win over Westcliff. The Bengals have gone 2-4 since then with losses to Southern Utah, St. Thomas MN, Idaho State and Grand Canyon.
In the Grand Canyon game last Tuesday, the Bengals went into the break tied 29-29. Idaho State gave up 39 points in the second half and lost it 68-66. Brayden Parker led the way on 18 points with four rebounds.
PICK: I’ll stay with Northern Arizona. Probably not touching it, though; there’s not a lot to get excited about here. The Lumberjacks are coming off a pretty valiant effort against Southern Utah in their last game. Northern Arizona has taken consecutive five-point losses, however they’ve scored 69 or more points in seven straight outings. Idaho State has failed to eclipse 70 points in five straight games themselves, so a good offensive performance from the Lumberjacks should do it here.
