The Long Beach State Beach and the Idaho Vandals meet Wednesday in college basketball action from ICCU Arena. Long Beach State is coming off a disappointing 6-11 campaign last year, leaving the team far down the rankings of the Big West Conference. As for the Vandals, they had an even rougher time last year at 1-17 and a last-place Big Sky finish. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Long Beach State stumbled most of last year, ultimately finishing 6-11 overall and 4-8 in Big West Conference play. That finish left the Beach just two spots out of the basement in the conference standings; they were ahead of only Cal Poly and UC San Diego (whose games weren’t counted in the standings due to a transition).

The Beach had several cancellations in January and early February, which killed any momentum the team could have had. LBSU lost their final four regular-season games before beating Cal State Northridge in the Big West Tournament. The Beach would fall to UCSB in the next round 95-87.

Over on the Idaho side, there’s not much to write home about from their dismal season in 2020-21. The Vandals skidded to a 1-21 overall finish; 1-17 in the Big Sky Conference for a last-place finish.

Idaho didn’t see a victory until late February when they beat Montana State 74-69. After another loss to finish off the regular season, the Vandals fell 69-64 to Montana in the First Round of the Big Sky Tournament.

The Beach are 6-0 ATS in their last six road games and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall. LBSU is also 2-5 ATS in their last seven as a favorite. Meanwhile, Idaho is 4-0-1 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 4-13 ATS in their last 17 at home.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Long Beach State. The bad news for the Beach is that they lost their top three scorers from last season in Michael Carter, Isaiah Washington and Chance Hunter. Returning guys like Joe Hampton (10.3 PPG) and Colin Slater (8.9 PPG) are going to have to step up, as will a handful of newcomers. The good news is that LBSU is facing Idaho in this first matchup, and the Vandals are similarly reloading. Probably a game to stay away from for now.
