McNeese State Cowboys

McNeese State won just five of their first 16 games versus Champion Christian, Lamar, Northern Iowa, Lamar again and Northwestern State. It’s been losses to Northwestern State, Houston Christian and Nicholls State (twice) since then.

In the Saturday rematch versus Nicholls State, the Cowboys trailed 40-32 going into the second. McNeese made up some ground on a 36-31 run from there but still lost 71-68. Christian Shumate led the team on 18 points and five rebounds.

Incarnate Word Cardinals

Over on the Incarnate Word side, they beat only TX Lutheran, Our Lady of the Lake, Dartmouth, Grambling State, DCC and Bethune-Cookman in their first 16 games. The Cardinals have gone 2-2 over their last four with losses to New Orleans and SE Louisiana.

In the Lamar game on Saturday, Incarnate Word held a 33-21 edge by halftime. Lamar fought back in the second but Incarnate Word ended up pulling off the win 70-64. Davante Dennis was the high man on 21 points and four rebounds.

I’ll probably go with Incarnate Word here. Granted, there’s not a lot to get excited about. That said, it should be a competitive matchup. The Cardinals have hit 70 or more points in five straight games, but they’ve gone a paltry 2-3 in that time. That’s good news for McNeese State, who has posted 68 or more points in six of their last seven games. This one could easily turn into a fairly high-scoring shootout, but if the score doesn’t get too out of hand it should still be Incarnate Word’s cover/win to take.
