The Elon Phoenix and the Indiana Hoosiers meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Bloomington Assembly Hall. Elon is 2-10 overall and fresh off a Sunday game versus Valparaiso. In that one the Phoenix lost by five points. As for Indiana, they’re sitting at 8-3 overall. The Hoosiers lost to Kansas in their last outing. Elon went just 1-8 over their first nine games, losing to East Tennessee State, Harvard, North Dakota, NC State, Jacksonville State, Radford, High Point and UNCG. After a win over JWU-Charlotte the Phoenix lost to Presbyterian.
Matched up against Valparaiso on Sunday, the Phoenix went into the break with a 42-29 deficit. Elon got better in the second half with a 37-29 run but still ended up losing 71-66 for their 10th defeat of the season.
Over on the Hoosiers’ side, they opened with wins over Morehead State, Bethune-Cookman, Xavier, Miami-OH, Little Rock, Jackson State and North Carolina. Indiana is 1-3 over their last four games with losses to Rutgers, Arizona and Kansas.
In the Kansas matchup on Saturday, the Hoosiers were drilled 44-29 in the first half. Indiana didn’t get any closer with a 40-33 deficit and lost 84-62. Trayce Jackson-Davis was the top team scorer with 13 points and six rebounds.
PICK: I’ll probably stay with Indiana. The line’s too thick to mess with, though. The Hoosiers didn’t play all that great versus a talented Kansas squad in their last matchup. Indiana shot 37.7 percent from the field in that one, but the team was out-rebounded 35-32 (10-9 offensive) and had 23 turnovers. The Hoosiers look a bit sketchy over their last four games; they’ve got three double-digit losses against some tough teams during that time. That said, Elon shouldn’t pose much of a threat to Indiana. The Phoenix have scored 66 points or fewer in three of the last four games and will likely also have trouble hitting that mark in this one.
