The Grambling State Tigers and the Iowa State Cyclones meet Thursday in college basketball action from Hilton Coliseum. Here’s an Iowa State vs Grambling State prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Iowa State vs Grambling State pick.
Grambling State Tigers Betting Preview
In the 2023-24 season, the Tigers cruised to a 21-15 overall record and a regular-season SWAC championship. Last year however, Grambling State took a significant step back. The Tigers finished just 12-22 in the 2024-25 campaign with a rough 7-11record in SWAC games. That would leave the team ahead of only Alabama A&M, Prairie View A&M, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State in the conference standings at the end of the regular season campaign. Grambling State took a 2-5 run into the postseason but did manage to take out Alabama A&M and Southern in the first two games of the conference tourney. Following a loss 64-62 versus Alabama State in the semifinals though, the Tigers’ season was at an end.
This year Grambling State kicked things off with a rather routine matchup Monday versus Huston-Tillotson. The Tigers were up by 20 points at the break then scored 50 more from there in a 91-47 blowout victory. Leading the way in scoring was Jimel Lane with 15 points, three rebounds and two assists. Devyn Franklin turned in 14 rebounds with six points, and Antonio Munoz added 12 points with four rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes of work in the win.
Iowa State Cyclones Betting Preview
Over on the Iowa State side, they took a mild step back last year following a 29-8 run in 2023-24. The Cyclones went 25-10 overall with a 13-7 record in a tough and crowded Big 12 Conference. That result would leave Iowa State with a fifth-place finish in the standings behind Houston, Texas Tech, Arizona and BYU. Iowa State would beat Cincinnati in the conference tournament ahead of a loss to BYU, then got a berth in the NCAA Tournament. After a First Round win versus Lipscomb the Cyclones took a loss to Ole Miss on March 23.
The Cyclones have a game in the bag this year as well. Iowa State played Fairleigh Dickinson on Monday and didn’t have too many difficulties. After a 45-19 edge at the half, Iowa State rode a 43-31 run the rest of the way in an 88-50 blowout victory at home. Topping the scorers was Milan Momcilovic with 29 points, three rebounds and two assists. Tamin Lipsey had 18 points with six boards and five assists, and Joshua Jefferson managed to double up with his 14 points, 10 boards and three rebounds in 29 minutes on the floor.

Iowa State vs Grambling State Prediction
I’ll lean toward Grambling State in this one. It’s a bit of a big ask to expect the Tigers to stay in range on the road versus a stacked Iowa State team, but I think they can pull it off if they play well. Grambling State got a big confidence boost with a blowout win versus an overmatched team on Monday, which will help if all goes well. The Tigers shot a solid 46.3 percent from the field with 14 assists and a 46-28 rebounding advantage but didn’t shoot well from outside with 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) on 3-pointers. The defense held the opposition to just 30.9 percent shooting on the other side.
As for Iowa State, they cruised through their opener versus FDU with 52.2 percent from the field, 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from outside and a 39-29 rebounding edge. The Cyclones will be pretty darn good once again this season if all goes well, and they’ve got some winnable games to warm up ahead of the looming St. John’s, Creighton and Purdue. For now though I think the Tigers can keep relative pace and eke into a cover.
