The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils and the Jackson State Tigers meet Saturday in college basketball action from Williams Assembly Center. MS Valley State is coming off a Thursday matchup versus Alcorn State. In that game, the Devils lost by three points. As for the Tigers, they played AR-Pine Bluff in their Thursday outing. MS Valley State has had a very rough year so far. The Delta Devils went into February at just 1-18 and then hit a 1-6 run through the month. The losses in February came to Jackson State, Alcorn State, Alabama A&M, Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M and AR-Pine Bluff.
On Thursday in the Alcorn State rematch, the Delta Devils were drilled 29-43 in the first half. MS Valley State got better from there on 40 points but still lost 72-69. Terry Collins finished with 24 points and five rebounds in the defeat.
Over on the Jackson State side, they went just 4-16 over their first 20 games but have gotten much better since then. The Tigers had a 5-2 run in February, beating MS Valley State, AR-Pine Bluff, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman and Prairie View A&M.
Matched up against AR-Pine Bluff on Thursday, the Tigers trailed by three points going into the second half. Jackson State hit a 49-38 run from there in an 87-79 win. Ken Evans led the team with 24 points, and Jayveous McKinnis doubled with 19 points and 14 boards.
The Tigers are 1-4 ATS in the last five at home and 1-5 ATS in the last six Saturday games. The over is 4-1 in Jackson State’s last five at home.
Meanwhile, the Devils are 6-2 ATS in their last eight overall and the under is 5-2 in their last seven Saturday games. The over is 8-2-1 in MS Valley State’s last 11 road games.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Jackson State. The Tigers have looked a lot better over this current 6-2 stretch, as they’ve faced some comparable teams along the way. Jackson State has only hit 70 points twice in the last eight games, but they’re getting wins with solid defense.
The last time these teams saw each other was a 69-65 Jackson State road win back on February 5. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one as a tight affair as well, but I think the Tigers can pull off the cover.
