Prairie View A&M Panthers
Prairie View A&M managed to go a rough 7-13 over their first 20 games this year. The Panthers hit a 4-4 stretch over the next eight, beating Texas Southern, Florida A&M, AR-Pine Bluff and MS Valley State during that time.
On Saturday versus Alcorn State, Prairie View took a 38-34 edge into the second half. The Panthers matched pace from there on 37 points and won 75-71. William Douglas scored 23 points and Yahuza Rasas added 16 points with 10 rebounds.
Jackson State Tigers
Over on the Jackson State side, they went just 6-14 in their first 20 outings of the season. The Tigers won just three of the next seven games, falling to Grambling State, Southern U, MS Valley State and Alcorn State along the way.
Matched up against Texas Southern on Saturday, the Tigers managed a nice 37-29 run in the first half. Jackson State had to scramble on a 40-34 deficit from there but still won 71-69. Coltie Young led the charge on 19 points and five rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stick with Jackson State. You could make a good case either way, though; this should be a fun matchup. The Tigers are currently on a 4-1 run with 69 or more points scored in each of the wins. Jackson State didn’t play all that well the last time these teams saw each other back on January 14 at William Nicks Building, however. That one ended up being a 59-50 Panthers win after a 26-14 first-half advantage. Speaking of Prairie View, they’re on a three-game win streak themselves with 67 or more points scored in each outing. I like a competitive, back-and-forth matchup here with an eventual Tigers cover/win.
