The Drexel Dragons and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Baha Mar Convention Center. Drexel comes into this one at 3-2 so far this year. The Dragons took out Charlotte in their last outing on Tuesday. As for Jacksonville State, they’re currently 1-3 so far and coming off a loss to Valparaiso. Drexel didn’t have any issues in their opener this year versus Neumann, cruising to a 103-74 win. The Dragons lost game two versus Syracuse 75-60, then beat St. Joseph’s 78-75 before a 90-87 loss to Tulane.
In Tuesday’s game versus Charlotte, the Dragons scored 31 points in the first half and 36 more in the second during a 67-55 win. Leading scorer Camren Wynter put up 20 points with four rebounds and five assists in the victory.
Over on the Jacksonville State side, they took a tough loss to Wichita State in their 2021-22 opener, falling 60-57. The Gamecocks bounced back in game two with a 70-47 win over Alabama A&M, but then lost to Troy in OT 69-65.
On Monday agains Valparaiso, Jacksonville State had a four-point halftime lead but coughed up 50 points from there in a 78-70 loss. Demaree King led the team on 23 points, and both Brandon Huffman and Darian Adams provided 15 points apiece.
PICK: I’m going to try Jacksonville State in this one, but probably not going near it. The Gamecocks put up a 40.4 percent shooting performance from the field against Valparaiso with 10-of-27 (37 percent) made from 3-point range and 38 rebounds. That said, Jacksonville State didn’t move the ball around well with seven assists and 14 turnovers.
As for Drexel, they shot a solid 47.4 percent in their win over Charlotte but were out-rebounded 34-33 and made a tepid 5-of-15 on 3-pointers. Overall these two teams should match up fairly well together, so I think we’ll have a good game on our hands. I like the Gamecocks a little better on a cover, but it’s close.
