The FIU Panthers and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Pete Mathews Coliseum. FIU is 8-2 so far this year. The Panthers lost to Eastern Michigan in their last outing. As for the Gamecocks, they’re 4-5 and coming off a win over LaGrange. FIU lost their opener to Georgia, but then rattled off wins over Trinity-FL, Ball State, Green Bay, UNC Greensboro, North Dakota, North Florida, Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. The Panthers lost their last game to Eastern Michigan, however.
In the Eastern Michigan matchup, the Panthers had a slim two-point halftime lead but eventually had to go to overtime. FIU was outscored by four from there in a 92-88 loss. Javaunte Hawkins led the way on 22 bench points with one rebound.
Over on the Jacksonville State side, they went 1-3 in their first four outings with losses to Wichita State, Troy and Valparaiso. Since then it’s been a 3-2 run for the Gamecocks with wins over Drexel, Elon and LaGrange.
In the LaGrange matchup on Monday, the Gamecocks turned a two-point halftime lead into a 110-80 win with a nice 68-40 second-half run. Darian Adams was the leading scorer with 31 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
Jacksonville State is 6-2 ATS in their last eight home games and 13-5 ATS in their last 18 overall. The Gamecocks are 2-6 ATS in the last eight Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 23 overall and 8-0 ATS in their last eight Wednesday games. The under is 9-3 in FIU’s last 12 Wednesday games.
PICK: I’m going with FIU in this one. The Panthers are coming off a strange game against Eastern Michigan where they shot 35.8 percent from the field with a 64-58 rebounding edge. FIU shot a tepid 10-of-39 (25.6 percent) from 3-point range and had 25 turnovers, but the team was in it until the very end.
As for Jacksonville State, they’ve had a few flashes here and there this season. The Gamecocks have been at 64 points or fewer in two of their last three, however. I don’t think they’ll be able to keep up if FIU is on point here.
