The North Florida Ospreys and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks meet Thursday in college basketball action from Pete Matthews Coliseum. North Florida is 5-17 this year so far. The Ospreys lost to Lipscomb in their last game. As for Jacksonville State, they’re sitting at 15-6 and beat Liberty over the weekend. North Florida stumbled to a 4-9 start this year, then had to take a postponement break from December 18 to January 5. Since then it’s been a 1-8 stretch for the Ospreys. The latest loss came over the weekend versus Lipscomb.
In the matchup versus Lipscomb on Saturday, North Florida was outscored 36-32 in the first half. The Ospreys took a 42-41 advantage from there but it wasn’t enough in a 77-74 loss. Leading scorer Carter Hendricksen put up 26 points with seven boards.
Over on the Jacksonville State side, they posted a spotty 5-6 run to start the year. Since then the Gamecocks have beaten Little Rock, Carver, North Alabama, Lipscomb, Eastern Kentucky, Central AR, FGCU, Bellarmine, Kennesaw State and Liberty in succession.
Matched up against Liberty on Saturday, the Gamecocks posted a 38-25 lead by halftime. Jacksonville State was outscored from there but hung on for the 77-67 win. Jalen Gibbs led the team on 21 points with four rebounds and two steals.
The Gamecocks are 15-7 ATS in their last 22 after an ATS win and 21-8 ATS in their last 29 overall. Jacksonville State is 6-0 ATS in their last six Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Ospreys are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. North Florida is 13-3 ATS in their last 16 Thursday games.
PICK: I’m likely staying with Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks have been on an impressive run during this 10-game win streak. They’ve scored 70 or more points in eight of those victories and seem to have their offense humming along nicely.
As for North Florida, they’ve been scoring pretty well themselves lately (73 or more in three of four games) but they’re also giving up quite a bit on the other side. Jacksonville State should have a clear path to a cover if they can continue to score.
