Florida Gulf Coast got off to a 6-3 start over their first nine games with losses to Loyola, USC and FIU. After wins versus Dartmouth, Florida A&M, Robert Morris and Mercer the Eagles lost to Canisius then took out North Florida.
In the North Florida matchup on Wednesday, the Eagles posted a 40-33 advantage in the second half on the way to a 74-67 win. Leading scorer Kevin Samuel put up 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Tavian Dunn-Martin logged 12 assists and 11 points.
Over on the Jacksonville side, they went 4-3 over their first seven games with losses to UCF, Minnesota and Georgia. The Dolphins are 4-1 since, taking out UNC Wilmington, Southern Miss, Webber International and Carver College in that time.
In the Carver matchup, the Dolphins posted 52 points in the first half and 46 more from there in a 98-45 blowout win. Tops in scoring was Tommy Bruner on 23 points, five rebounds and five assists during the victory.
The Dolphins are 4-0 ATS in their last four Saturday games and 7-2 ATS in the last nine overall. Jacksonville is 6-0 ATS in their last six as a home underdog.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 5-0 ATS in their last five Saturday games and the over is 4-0 in their last four Saturday games. The under is 27-11-1 in FGCU’s last 39 road games versus a team with a winning home record.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles got off to a slow start versus a not-so-great North Florida team in their last outing, but to their credit FGCU turned it on in the second half. Florida Gulf Coast has hit 67 or more points in each of their last six games and should score well here also. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Jacksonville on the court however, so there’s no telling what the Dolphins will look like.
