Texas Longhorns
Texas managed a nice 14-2 run through their first 16 games this year. The only blemishes in that time were to Illinois and Kansas State. The Longhorns are 4-2 since then, beating Texas Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Baylor in that time.
In the Baylor game on Monday, the Longhorns went into the break with a 38-36 edge. Texas kept it up on a 38-35 run after halftime and took the win 76-71. Tops in scoring was Jabari Rice with 21 points and six boards.
Kansas State Wildcats
Over on the Kansas State side, they were 15-1 at the 16-game mark this year. The only loss came to Butler on November 30. The Wildcats 3-3 in their last six outings, falling to TCU, Iowa State and Kansas in those games.
Matched up against Kansas on Tuesday, Kansas State was down 49-37 in the locker room. The Wildcats kept pace from there but couldn’t make up any ground in a 90-78 loss. Markquis Nowell put up 23 points and Keyontae Johnson doubled on 22 points and 12 boards.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stick with Kansas State here. Neither team has been especially dominant lately however, so both teams could use a good showing. That said, the Wildcats managed a 116-103 win the last time these teams met up on January 3 at Moody Center. Kansas State shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor in that one and had a 33-26 rebounding advantage. It may be tough for the Wildcats to match that shooting percentage but this should still be a fairly high-scoring game on both sides. I like a close, competitive matchup with Kansas State eking out a cover/win in the end. Should be a fun game to watch.
