Sam Houston rolled through their first six games this year with a run of victories, but then fell to Nevada 78-60 on November 28. The Bearkats rebounded with a win over Dallas Christian College, then lost to Oklahoma State last Tuesday.
In the matchup versus Oklahoma State, the Bearkats were down 32-20 by halftime. Sam Houston State didn’t get any closer after that and ended up losing 65-51. Qua Grant topped the team on 15 points, and Donte Powers added 10 points.
Over on the LA-Monroe side, they won just two of their first eight games, losing to Texas A&M, TCU, LA Tech, Omaha, Loyola MD and Tulane in that time. After a win over Champion Christian, the Warhawks lost to Northwestern State over the weekend.
In Saturday’s matchup versus Northwestern State, the Warhawks were outscored 41-34 in the first half and 50-39 from there in a 91-73 defeat. Thomas Howell led the team 16 points with nine rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes of work.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Sam Houston State. The Bearkats posted a pretty limp effort against a decent Oklahoma State team in their last outing. Sam Houston State shot just 34.7 percent from the field and 28.6 (6-of-21) from 3-point range in that one while getting out-rebounded 37-22. The Bearkats have scored 60 or fewer points in two of their last three games, however this matchup should be in the team’s wheelhouse. I don’t see LA-Monroe keeping a cover pace if Sam Houston plays well.
