Southern Miss kicked off the season with a game versus William Carey. The Eagles had a tepid first half but recovered in a 75-42 victory. In their second game of the season, Southern Miss kept it up with a 60-48 win versus Vanderbilt.
Matched up against the Loyola Wolfpack on Monday in their last game, the Golden Eagles didn’t have too much trouble. Southern Miss was up 45-32 by the break and managed an 86-62 win. Felipe Haase put up 17 points and eight boards to lead the way.
Over on the Liberty side, they rolled right through Regent VA in their opener this year. The Flames had a 104-38 blowout by game’s end. Liberty’s second matchup was against a tough Alabama team however, and the Flames lost 95-59.
The Flames were able to get back into the win column on Monday versus NC Central. Liberty jumped out to a 45-21 halftime lead and cruised to a 79-63 victory. Tops in scoring was Darius McGhee with 27 points, and Brody Peebles added 12 points.
PICK: I’m probably going to try Southern Miss. This should be a pretty good matchup, though. The Golden Eagles are 3-0 so far, but a couple of those wins were pretty much a given. That said, Southern Miss is still taking care of business this year. As for Liberty, they’ve got a couple of fairly soft opponents in their wins this year as well—the Flames have scored well in those matchups though, and should put up a good total here. I like this to be a competitive game, with Southern Miss eking out a road cover.
