The Hampton Pirates and the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds meet in college basketball action from Reitz Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Hampton Pirates will be looking to build on back-to-back wins after a 54-53 win over William & Mary last time out. Najee Garvin leads the Pirates in scoring and rebounding with 15.7 PPG and 6 RPG while Russell Dean has 12.5 PPG with 3.5 RPG and a team-high 3.5 APG to lead the Pirates in assists and make up the other half of the duo of double-digit scorers for Hampton so far this season. As a team, Hampton is averaging 62.3 PPG on 38.6% shooting from the field, 27.1% from three and 68.6% from the foul line while allowing 64.6 PPG on 40.9% shooting from the field and 24.5% from three this season.
The Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds will try to bounce back from an 84-71 loss to St. Bonaventure last time out. Cameron Spencer leads the Greyhounds in scoring with 18.3 PPG along with 4.4 RPG and 3.9 APG while Jaylin Andrews has 14.5 PPG as the only other double-digit scorer for Loyola-Maryland so far this season. Kenny Jones has 8.4 PPG and a team-high 4.7 APG and Golden Dike has a team-high 7 RPG as well this season. As a team, Loyola-Maryland is averaging 68.2 PPG on 42.6% shooting from the field, 30.7% from three and 70.9% from the foul line while allowing 68.3 PPG on 43.3% shooting from the field and 34.9% from three this season.
Hampton is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Sunday games and 1-7 ATS in their last 8 road games against a team with a home winning percentage above .600 while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Loyola-Maryland is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14 games following an ATS win while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a loss.
My concern for Hampton is that while I’m not normally comfortable laying points, especially this many, with a fairly unproven Loyola-Maryland team, the bottom line is that they’re scoring a lot more consistently than Hampton is and while Hampton’s got a couple of wins lately by relying on defense, that’ll only get you so far and I think this is where the buck stops. Give me Loyola-Maryland and lay the points.
