UC Riverside managed to go 16-12 overall last year with a 9-6 record in the Big West Conference. The Highlanders landed around the middle of the pack in the standings with that result, and ultimately lost to Hawaii in their first game of the conference tourney.
In their opener game on Monday, UC Riverside was outscored 46-28 by Colorado during the first half. The Highlanders were better after the break but still lost 82-66. Zyon Pullin led the team on 17 points and six rebounds.
Over on the Loyola Marymount side, they had a rough season in 2021-22. The Lions managed an 11-18 overall record with a 3-12 run in West Coast Conference matchups. That would put the Lions in second-to-last place in the standings, ahead of only Pepperdine (1-15).
LMU got off to a nice start in their first game this year against Life Pacific. The Lions posted 46 points in the first half and another 53 from there in a 99-49 blowout win. Both Keli Leaupepe and Chance Stephens scored 15 points apiece to lead the team.
PICK: I might take a stab on LMU here. The Lions faced off against an overmatched Life Pacific team in their opener and did exactly what they were supposed to do with nearly 100 points along the way to the win. Five different LMU players were in double-digit points, and pretty much everyone got in on the action. As for UC Riverside, they did a good job on the boards against Colorado, outpacing the Buffaloes 44-43. The cold 3-point shooting (4-of-21) didn’t help though, nor did the 15 turnovers and 22 fouls. This is looking like a pretty fun matchup on paper, and I think LMU can hang in there to stay ahead.Â
