The NJIT Highlanders and the Maine Black Bears meet Sunday in college basketball action from Memorial Gym. NJIT is sitting at 3-11 overall. The Highlanders lost to UMass Lowell in their most recent game last Saturday. As for Maine, they’ve gone 6-8 so far and lost to UMass Lowell on Thursday. NJIT was just 1-9 through their first 10 games this year. The lone win came November 22 versus Sacred Heart. The Highlanders are 2-2 since then with wins over Niagara and St. Elizabeth alongside losses to USF and UMass Lowell.

In the UMass Lowell game last weekend, the Highlanders trailed by nine at the break. NJIT made a game of it in the second but still lost 67-64. Miles Coleman led the way on 18 points with four assists and three rebounds.

Over on the Maine side, they were 6-4 after 10 games with losses to Nebraska, Brown, Fordham and Marist. The Black Bears have lost to Akron, Ohio State, Harvard and UMass Lowell in their last four.

On Thursday versus the River Hawks, Maine was down 38-29 by halftime. The Black Bears also fought back in the second on a 41-34 run but lost 72-70. Gedi Juozapaitis was tops on 18 points with four assists.

PICK: I’m going to try Maine here I suppose. There’s not a ton of intrigue involved in this matchup, though; both teams are struggling right now. That said, Maine gave UMass Lowell a good second half in their last outing, and their most recent two losses have been by a combined three points. Maine is capable of scoring pretty well in the right matchup and should have a decent offensive afternoon here. As for NJIT, they’ve hit 73 or more points in two of their last three games and should be in the mix until late in the game.
