Creighton Bluejays
The Bluejays were able to win five straight to kick off the year before a loss to Colorado State in late November. After three more wins over Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Central Michigan, Creighton took another loss to UNLV and a win versus Alabama. The Bluejays’ latest game was another loss, this time versus Villanova.
In the Villanova matchup back on December 20, the Bluejays gave away a 34-24 halftime lead and had to go to overtime. Creighton ended up losing that one 68-66 in a tough result. Both Trey Alexander (15 rebounds) and Baylor Scheierman (11 rebounds) doubled up in the losing effort.
Marquette Golden Eagles
Over on the Marquette side, they also won their first five games of the season before a 1-2 stretch that featured losses to Purdue and Wisconsin. The Golden Eagles recovered with wins over Texas, Notre Dame and St. Thomas-MN before another loss to Providence and a victory over Georgetown.
Matched up against the Hoyas last Friday, the Eagles stormed out to a 41-24 halftime lead. Marquette cruised the rest of the way on a 40-27 run and took the win 81-51. Tops in scoring was David Joplin with 20 points and nine rebounds. Ben Gold added nine points and six boards off the bench as well.
ANDREW’S CREIGHTON VS MARQUETTE PREDICTION
I’ll take a stab on Marquette. This should be a very interesting matchup though, and you could call it either way. The Eagles didn’t have too many issues with Georgetown in their last outing, shooting 44.6 percent from the field with 39 rebounds and 22 team assists. Marquette got 28 points off 19 Hoyas turnovers as well. The Eagles have scored 71 or more points in all but two games this year.
As for Creighton, they’re coming off a tough loss to a tricky Villanova team. The Bluejays have scored 66 or fewer points in each of their three losses this year (including one overtime), so if they can hit the 70-point mark Creighton will have a good chance here. Ultimately I think Marquette covers, but it’ll be a great matchup to watch.
