The Providence Friars and the Marquette Golden Eagles meet Monday in college basketball action from Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Here’s a Marquette vs Providence prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Marquette vs Providence pick.

Providence Friars Betting Preview

The Friars opened the year on a .500 run over their first eight games at 4-4 overall, taking losses to Virginia Tech, Colorado, Wisconsin and Florida in that time. Providence would win four of the next six games over Fairleigh Dickinson, Rhode Island, Brown and St. John’s, but then took losses to UConn, Xavier and Villanova. Through the first 17 games of the season, that would leave the Friars with an 8-9 overall record in the books.

In Friday’s matchup with Creighton, the Friars were down by one point heading into the second half. Providence hit a 48-42 run the rest of the way and ultimately powered out a 93-88 victory at home in the end. Stefan Vaaks led the team on his 24 points, seven assists and two rebounds. Both Jamier Jones (18 points; 11 rebounds) and Oswin Erhunmwunse (14 points; 13 rebounds) notched double-doubles in the victory effort as well.

Marquette Golden Eagles Betting Preview

Over on the Marquette side, they stumbled to a 5-4 record in their first nine games with losses to Indiana, Maryland, Dayton and Oklahoma. The Golden Eagles would then hit a 1-8 run over the next nine games, featuring losses to Wisconsin, Purdue, Georgetown, Creighton, Seton Hall, UConn, Villanova and St. John’s—with a lone win over Xavier. Across their first 18 games the Eagles emerged with a 6-12 run.

In game 19 versus DePaul on Friday, the Eagles were up by a 44-36 score at the end of the first half. Marquette was outpaced 44-31 the rest of the way however, leading to an 80-75 loss on the road in the end. Nigel James led the team in the losing effort with his 18 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Royce Parham had 14 points and Chase Ross chipped in 13 points with four rebounds and four assists in the defeat.

Why the Marquette Golden Eagles will win

  • Providence has lost seven of its last eight road games against Conference opponents.
  • Marquette has won each of its last five games against Providence at Fiserv Forum.
  • Providence has lost the first half in seven of its last eight road games against Conference opponents.

Why the Providence Friars will win

  • Marquette has lost nine of its last 10 games.
  • Providence has won each of its last five Monday games.
  • Marquette has lost the first half in each of its last six day games against Conference opponents.

Marquette vs Providence Prediction

I’ll lean toward Providence but this one’s something of a coin flip. The Friars are coming off a nice victory at home over Creighton, shooting 44.9 percent from the field with a 43-32 rebounding edge a 50-32 advantage on points in the paint and just nine turnovers. Providence is just 2-5 in the last seven games, but the good news is that they’re still scoring well. The bad news is that the Friars have given up 88 or more points in four straight outings (a 1-3 run).

As for Marquette, they couldn’t keep pace with DePaul on Friday after a nice first half. The Eagles shot just 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from the line and had a 38-25 rebounding deficit, as well as giving up 47.7 percent from the field and 45.8 percent (11-of-24) on defense. Marquette has given up 76 or more points in three straight games, with a combined 172 in the last pair alone. This one should be a pretty high total if the trends hold, as well as being a competitive matchup.
