Xavier Musketeers
The Musketeers started out the year on a nice clip at 15-3 over their first 18 games. Since then Xavier is 4-3 with wins over Georgetown, UConn, Providence and St. John’s alongside losses to DePaul, Creighton and Butler.
In the Butler game on Friday, the Musketeers were down 35-21 going into the second half. Xavier made a run at it with a 46-34 stretch but still lost 69-67. Colby Jones posted 17 points with eight rebounds to lead the way in the defeat.
Marquette Golden Eagles
Over on the Marquette side, they went 14-4 over their first 18 games this year. The Eagles are 6-2 in their last eight games with wins over Providence, Seton Hall, DePaul, Villanova, Butler and Georgetown in that time.
Back on Saturday versus Georgetown, the Eagles powered out a 45-33 halftime edge. Marquette kept it up in the second half with a 44-42 run and won the game 89-75. Oso Ighodaro, Tyler Kolek and Kameron Jones each scored a team-high 14 points.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with Marquette in this one. The Eagles didn’t have a ton of trouble with Georgetown in their last game, posting 52.2 percent shooting with 48.4 (15-of-31) from 3-point range. It was a nice bounce-back from a tough loss to UConn. Marquette has some revenge motivation for this rematch as well; the last time these teams met up back on January 15 at Cintas Center, the Musketeers powered out an 80-76 win. I like the Golden Eagles to control this one and bag a cover in the end. Should be a fun matchup regardless.
