The UAB Blazers and the Marshall Thundering Herd meet Saturday in college basketball action from Cam Henderson Center. UAB is coming off a Thursday game versus Western Kentucky. The Blazers ended up eking out a three-point victory. As for Marshall, they played Middle Tennessee in their last game. In that one the Herd lost by two points. UAB got off to a 9-3 start through a dozen games this year, losing to only South Carolina, San Francisco and West Virginia. A 7-1 run followed, with wins over MS Valley State, UTEP, UTSA, North Texas, FIU, Florida Atlantic and Louisiana Tech.
In the Thursday game versus Western Kentucky, UAB went into the break with a 34-27 lead. The Blazers were able to hang on for the 68-65 win. Jordan Walker led the wagon 21 points with five assists, and Trey Jemison added 12 rebounds.
Over on the Marshall side, they got off to a 7-3 run in their first 10 this year. The Herd hit a massive losing streak after that, falling to Ohio, Northern Iowa, Toledo, LA Tech, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, FIU and Florida Atlantic again.
Matched up against Middle Tennessee on Thursday, Marshall scored 40 points in the first half and 39 more from there but it wasn’t enough in a tight 81-79 loss. Andrew Taylor was the leading scorer with 22 points and seven boards.
The Herd are 5-19-3 ATS in their last 27 overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four Saturday games. The under is 9-3 in Marshall’s last 12 overall.
Meanwhile, the Blazers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six road games and 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine overall. The over is 6-2-1 in UAB’s last nine overall.
PICK: I’m going to try UAB but probably not touching this one; the line is a little too thick for comfort. The Blazers are on a nice four-game win streak right now. They’ve been scoring well lately, with 68 or more points in each of their last nine outings. As for Marshall, they’re on an ugly 10-game losing streak right now but they’ve had a few near-misses in recent games. Still, I think the Blazers will take the cover here if they play to their capabilities.
