The George Washington Colonials and the Maryland Terrapins meet Thursday in college basketball action from Xfinity Center College Park. George Washington is coming off a win in their opener, taking out St. Francis PA by three points. As for Maryland, they beat Quinnipiac in their first outing of the year. George Washington had a forgettable season in 2020-21, going 5-12 overall and 3-5 in Atlantic 10 Conference games. That mark left the Colonials just three spots out of the basement in the standings. George Washington ultimately fell to George Mason in the second round of the conference tourney.
The Colonials started off the year with a victory 75-72 over St. Francis-PA on Tuesday. George Washington was outscored 46-36 in the second half but was able to hang on. Tops in scoring was Brendan Adams with 22 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Over on the Maryland side, they finished with a 17-14 record overall last year with a 9-11 mark in a tough Big Ten conference. The Terrapins earned an invite to the NCAA Tournament, where they took out UConn in the First Round before falling to Alabama in the Second.
The Terrapins kicked off their year with a win over Quinnipiac 83-69 on Tuesday. Qudus Wahab was the lead scorer there with 17 points, two assists and six rebounds. Eric Ayala and Donta Scott each notched 13 points, combining for four assists and 13 rebounds as well.
George Washington is 2-7 ATS in their last nine road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six Thursday games. The Colonials are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall.
Meanwhile, the Terrapins are 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 home games. Maryland is also 2-6 ATS in their last eight on Thursday.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Maryland here. The Terrapins put up a pretty solid effort against Quinnipiac as expected in their opener, jumping out to a 41-25 halftime lead and cruising the rest of the way. Maryland hit 49.2 percent of their field goals and out-rebounded the Bobcats 45-29.
As for George Washington, they had a decent number of assists (14) and were okay from 3-point range (37.5 percent) against St. Francis-PA, but faded down the stretch. I don’t think they’ll be able to keep up with Maryland for long.
