The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Memphis Tigers meet Saturday in college basketball action from FedExForum. Vanderbilt has lost six of their last seven games, falling to 4-7 on the year with a loss to Western Carolina this week. As for Memphis, they’ve won four straight at 9-2 this year, most recently taking out Virginia on Tuesday. Let’s get into our Vanderbilt vs. Memphis prediction. Vanderbilt Commodores
The Commodores started out the season pretty well with a 3-1 run, taking out USC Upstate, UNC Greensboro and Central Arkansas along the way. Since then Vanderbilt has gone just 1-6 though, taking losses to NC State, Arizona State, Boston College, San Francisco, Texas Tech and Western Carolina.
Matched up against Western Carolina on Tuesday, the Commodores were within five points at halftime. After a 37-33 second-half run, Vanderbilt came up short in a 63-63 loss. Topping the team in the losing effort was Ezra Manjon with 18 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Memphis Tigers
Over on the Memphis side, their year started with a five-game win streak over Jackson State, Missouri, Alabama State, Michigan and Arkansas. After losses to Villanova and Ole Miss in the next pair, the Tigers beat VCU, Texas A&M, Clemson and Virginia in succession during a great run.
In the Virginia matchup back on Tuesday, the Tigers were ahead 38-32 going into the second half. Memphis kept the pressure on from there, getting even better with a 39-22 run in a 77-54 blowout win. Leading the way was David Jones with 26 points, four rebounds and two assists on 8-of-15 from the field.
ANDREW’S FREE VANDERBILT VS MEMPHIS PREDICTION
I’ll stick with Memphis. The line’s a little thick to mess with, though. The Tigers are on an unbelievable run over the last three games, surviving the gauntlet of ranked teams with flying colors. In their latest win over Virginia, Memphis shot 46.4 percent from the field with 32 rebounds and a nice 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) from the line. The Tigers have scored 77 or more points in each of the last five games, and 70 or more points in all but one outing this year so far.
As for Vanderbilt, they haven’t gotten past 67 points in five of their last six games and are struggling during this 1-6 run. This matchup isn’t going to get any easier, and I don’t see the Commodores getting close.
