The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils and the Mississippi State Bulldogs meet Saturday in college basketball action from Humphrey Coliseum. Mississippi Valley State is fresh off a Thursday game versus Arkansas State. In that one the Delta Devils lost by 20 points. MS Valley State got off to a rough start this year, losing to Baylor, Hawaii, Yale and Eastern Washington in the first four. After a win over North Alabama the Delta Devils fell to Missouri, Air Force and Colorado State in the next trio.
In the Thursday game versus Arkansas State, MS Valley State was down 30-20 by the break and only scored 18 points after that for a 58-38 loss. Terry Collins was the only team player in double-digits with 12 points.
Over on the Mississippi State side, it’s been smooth sailing during an impressive start so far. The Bulldogs have taken out Texas-A&M-CC, Akron, AR-Pine Bluff, South Dakota, Marquette, Utah and Omaha in their first seven outings.
In the Monday game versus Omaha, Mississippi State got off to a 34-24 halftime edge. The Bulldogs posted 40 more points in the second for a 74-54 win. Tolu Smith led the team on 12 points, and DJ Jeffries added 10 points with three boards.
PICK: I’m staying with Mississippi State. Not touching it though, due to the thick line. The Bulldogs are off to a wonderful start so far despite a couple of close calls (Marquette and Utah, namely). Defensively Mississippi State has been great; they’ve allowed 55 or fewer points in every game so far this year.
On paper, Mississippi State shouldn’t have too much trouble with the Delta Devils. That said, there’s always the chance the Bulldogs overlook this one in favor of next weekend’s road game versus Minnesota or the heavy-hitting Alabama-Tennessee combo coming late this month. Still, I think Mississippi State will be fine on a cover here.
