Alabama State lost their first five games of the year before finally picking up consecutive wins over NC Central and Tuskegee. Since then it’s been losses to North Alabama, Dayton, Samford, Pepperdine, Texas and Texas Tech.
In the Texas Tech game, the Hornets were down 42-27 by halftime and didn’t get any closer in an eventual 75-53 blowout defeat. Gerald Liddell led the team with 15 points and five boards, while Trace Young added 14 points.
Over on the MS Valley State side, it’s been 10 games of futility so far. The Devils’ losses have come to St. John’s, Cal Baptist, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, North Alabama, Grand Canyon, Nicholls State (twice), Arkansas State and UAB.
In the UAB game on December 22, the Devils scored 28 points in the first half and 30 more from there in a 100-58 loss. Leading scorer Robert Carpenter put up 14 points, and Caleb Hunter added 12 points in 25 minutes.
MS Valley State is 4-1 ATS in their last five at home and the under is 5-2 in their last seven Monday games. The over is 5-1 in the Devils’ last six after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are 6-0 ATS in their last six after an ATS win and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 after a straight-up loss. The under is 4-0 in AL State’s last four overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on MS Valley State. If nothing else, this should be a pretty competitive matchup. The Devils have put up a few good scoring outings lately, with 73 or more points in three of their last four. MS Valley State is still giving up points at a great clip on the other side (82 or more in each of their last five) however so there should be plenty of room for Alabama State to score here. I like this one as a higher-scoring game from both sides with MS Valley State banging out a cover in the end.
