Lehigh came out of the gate strong this year despite a tough loss to Rutgers. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Knights 36-31 in the first half, but ultimately lost 73-70 in overtime. Marques Wilson was the team’s top scorer there with 21 points and three assists.
In game two against NJIT, the Mountain Hawks struggled mightily. Lehigh was down 36-23 at the break and didn’t get any closer than that in a 73-56 blowout defeat. Wilson was again the team’s top scorer, turning in 15 points with three rebounds and a block.
Over on the Monmouth side, they had a tough game in their opener versus Charlotte. After a 32-23 halftime deficit, the Hawks rallied in the second half. It wasn’t enough in a 68-66 loss, though. Walker Miller led the team with 23 points and seven rebounds.
In their second matchup of the year versus Towson the Hawks got their first win. Monmouth posted 43 points in the first half and 36 more in the second for a 79-71 victory. George Papas led the way there with 22 points, two rebounds and one assist.
The Hawks are 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 Tuesday games and 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine at home. Monmouth is 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall.
Meanwhile, the Mountain Hawks are 2-6 ATS in their last eight Tuesday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games. Lehigh is 6-13 ATS in their last 19 overall.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Monmouth in this one. The Hawks took a tough loss in their opener but bounced back nicely in game two versus Towson. Monmouth shot 50 percent from the floor in that one with 5-of-11 (45 .5 percent) from 3-point range. There were some blemishes though, like the 19 turnovers and 29 fouls.
As for Lehigh, they looked great against Rutgers in the opener but couldn’t do much at all in game two. This should be a better matchup for the Mountain Hawks, but I still think Monmouth has the cover.
