The Bengals went a rough 4-10 over their first 14 games this year. The only wins in that time were versus Warner Pacific, Northwest U, Campbell and Lindenwood. Idaho State is a better 3-2 since then however, taking out Omaha, Portland State and Idaho in that quintet.

On Saturday versus Eastern Washington, the Bengals fell back into the loss column. Idaho State trailed by two points heading into the second half, then got outscored 41-31 from there in a 79-67 result. Tops in scoring was Miguel Tomley with 22 points, two rebounds and one assist.

Montana State Bobcats

Over on the Bobcats’ side, they went a sketchy 6-9 to start the year with wins over Northwest Indian, California, UC Riverside, Sagu American Indian, Southern Utah and Idaho State. Montana State is 2-1 in their last three with wins over Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado.

Matched up against Montana on Saturday, the Bobcats were down by two points in the locker room. Montana State didn’t end up getting any closer on a 49-41 second-half run and fell 87-77. Leading the team was Robert Ford with 30 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

I’ll stick with Montana State. This one’s something of a coin flip, though. The Bobcats shot well in their last game versus Montana (55.4 percent), however they also gave up 61.5 percent shooting and got outmuscled on the boards 26-21. The good news is that Montana State is scoring well during this 2-1 run with 77 or more points in all three outings.

As for Idaho State, they’re getting wins with defense lately as they’ve held opponents to less than 67 points in four of the last five games. I like Montana State’s offense to buck that trend and cover in this one, but you could argue it either way.
