The Mercer Bears and the Morehead State Eagles meet in college basketball action from the Ellis T. Johnson Arena on Tuesday night.
Mercer Gets First Win
The Mercer Bears come into this one looking to build on their first win of the season in a 66-61 win over Chicago State last time out. Jalyn McCreary leads Mercer in scoring and rebounding with 16 PPG and 6 RPG while Robby Carmody has 13 PPG with 4 RPG as the only other double-digit scorer for Mercer so far this season. Jake Davis has added 8.5 PPG with 4 RPG while Jah Quinones has added a team-high 2 APG as well this season. As a team, Mercer is averaging 65 PPG on 41.3% shooting from the field, 26% from three and 66% from the foul line this season.
Morehead State Routed By Purdue
The Morehead State Eagles came back down to earth in their first loss of the season, crashing 87-57 against Purdue last time out. Riley Minix leads the Eagles in scoring and rebounding with 18.3 PPG and 7.3 RPG while Jordan Lathon and Eddie Ricks III each have 10.3 PPG and 6.3 RPG as well this season. Drew Thelwell’s added 10 PPG to cap off the group of double-digit scorers for Morehead State while also leading the Eagles with 3.3 APG and Kalil Thomas has also chipped in 9 PPG and 3 RPG as well on the year. As a team, Morehead State is averaging 75.3 PPG on 44.5% shooting from the field, 29.5% from three and 67.3% from the foul line this season.
I’m rolling with the Eagles in this one if forced to pick. A lot of teams are going to lose to Purdue, so this is going to be a good measuring stick game to see where Morehead State is really at. Mercer on the other hand, lost to a subdivision opponent in their opener and then barely got by one of the worst teams in college basketball in Chicago State. I just feel a lot better about Morehead State’s scoring depth in this matchup compared to what Mercer’s bringing to the table, so give me Morehead State laying the points here.
