The South Carolina State Bulldogs and the Morgan State Bears meet Thursday in MEAC Tournament college basketball action from Norfolk Scope. South Carolina State is 15-15 this year. The Bulldogs lost to NC Central in their last game. As for Morgan State, they’re 12-13 so far and coming off a win over Coppin State. South Carolina State was just 1-7 over their first eight games this year, and it took another couple of months before the team crawled back over .500 again. The Bulldogs are on a three-game losing streak versus Norfolk State, Howard and NC Central right now.
Last Thursday versus NC Central, the Bulldogs held a 33-25 lead by halftime. SC State was outscored 29-42 in the second for a 67-62 loss. Leading the team in scoring was TJ Madlock with 23 points and five rebounds.
Over on the Morgan State side, they’ve had some struggles of their own in trying to get back to .500 this year. The Bears have done well lately with four straight wins over Norfolk State, Delaware State, MD-Eastern Shore and Coppin State, though.
Matched up against Coppin State last Thursday, the Bears held a slim two-point lead going into the second half. Morgan State scored 39 points from there in a 63-59 win. Isaiah Burke led the way on his 14 points and two rebounds.
The Bears are 9-19 ATS in their last 28 after an ATS win and 1-5 ATS in their last six Thursday games. Morgan State is 5-1 ATS in their last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four neutral-site games and 1-4 ATS in their last five Thursday games. The under is 6-1 in SC State’s last seven overall.
PICK: I’m going to try Morgan State here. The Bears are looking pretty good over this 5-1 stretch. They’ve hit 76 or more points in four of those six games. Morgan State also won both these matchups this year: 88-81 (OT) on January 10 and 76-66 on February 14.
As for SC State, they’ve been at 62 points or fewer in three straight games and are really going to need to pump up the offense here. I like the Bulldogs to keep the pace for the first half or so before Morgan State powers into a cover/win.
