Mount St. Mary’s vs Merrimack 2/3/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Merrimack Warriors and the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers meet Thursday in college basketball action from Knott Arena. Merrimack is sitting at 8-13 this year. The Warriors lost to Bryant in their last game. As for Mount St. Mary’s, they’re 10-10 on the season and fresh off a win over St. Francis PA. Merrimack hit a 4-8 run over the first dozen games this year, then won four straight in late December/early January. Since then it’s been a string of losses to St. Francis PA, Mount St. Mary’s, Bryant, Wagner and Bryant again. 

In the Bryant matchup last Thursday, the Warriors were down 39-32 by halftime and ended up limping to a 76-67 defeat. Tops in scoring was Malik Edmead with 14 points and three assists. All five Merrimack starters finished double-figures during the defeat. 

Over on the Mount St. Mary’s side, their year began on a 5-10 stretch with a long postponement break in late December. Since then it’s been wins over Merrimack, Sacred Heart, Central CT State, Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis PA. 

Back on Saturday versus St. Francis PA, the Mountaineers scored 35 points in the first half and 36 more from there in a 71-54 win. Leading the scoring was Jalen Benjamin with 22 points, two rebounds, four assists and a steal. 

Mount St. Mary’s is 4-0 ATS in their last four at home and 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall. The Mountaineers are 7-0 ATS in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Warriors are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS loss. The under is 23-6 in Merrimack’s last 29 road games. 

PICK: I’m going to try Mount St. Mary’s here. The Mountaineers have been a mixed bag on the scoreboard over this 6-1 run. They’ve finished below 70 points in five of those seven games, but generally they’re doing a nice job on defense. The last time these teams met up back on January 17, the Mountaineers posted a 57-50 win. Both teams shot over 40 percent in that one, and Merrimack held a 37-31 rebounding edge. This one should be a competitive game as well, but I like the Mountaineers on the eventual cover.
