Denver managed to go 8-1 over their first nine games this year. The lone loss came to Sacramento State. Since then the Pioneers are just 1-2, falling to Sacramento State and UCLA before a win over CO Christian.
In the CO Christian game back on Wednesday, the Pioneers took a 38-38 tie into the break. Denver outscored the Cougars 47-36 from there in an 85-74 win. both Tommy Bruner and Justin Mullins scored 23 points apiece.
Over on the Mavericks’ side, they’ve managed wins over Idaho, LA-Monroe, Southern and Midland. The losses have come to Kansas, Nebraska, Ball State, Iowa, Mississippi State, North Texas, Drake and Montana State.
In the Midland matchup on Tuesday, the Mavericks jumped out to a 55-31 advantage by halftime. Omaha scored another 49 points from there and won 104-72. Marquel Sutton topped the team on 29 points with six boards.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Denver here. The Pioneers took a while to get going versus CO Christian in their last game but everything turned out fine. Denver took a 23-point loss to a very good UCLA team on December 10. Otherwise the Pioneers have been very competitive in their losses and they’re posting solid points totals this season. As for Omaha, they had a string of four straight games with 65 or fewer points prior to their big win over Midland. Things will be tougher for the Mavericks in this one and I don’t think they’ll keep pace for long. Should be a fairly close game, though.
