The Maine Black Bears and the Nebraska Cornhuskers meet Monday in college basketball action from Pinnacle Bank Arena. Maine went just 6-23 overall last year, finishing in last place in the American East Conference standings. As for Nebraska, they also struggled last season with a 10-22 overall record. Maine went just 6-23 overall last year, but oddly enough that’s four more games than they won a season prior. The Black Bears finished 3-15 in America East Matchups, which left the team in the basement of the standings (three games behind NJIT).

The Black Bears started out the year at 2-2 but would end non-conference play at just 3-8 amid a seven-game losing streak. Maine didn’t win consecutive games all year, and finished off the campaign with a 75-56 loss to Vermont on March 1.

Over on the Nebraska side, they struggled in a difficult Big Ten Conference last season, but still improved over the previous year at 10-22 overall. The Cornhuskers were 4-16 in conference play, one spot out of the basement in the standings.

Nebraska kicked off the year at a solid 5-2, but the team wouldn’t win consecutive games again until the end of the season (wins over Penn State, Ohio State and Wisconsin). The Huskers lost to Northwestern in the first game of the conference tourney.

Maine is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 road games and the over is 9-1 in their last 10 road games. Nebraska is 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and 9-2 ATS in their last 11 Monday games.

PICK: I’ll stay with Nebraska here. The Huskers lose 11 players from last year’s team, no name bigger than one-and-done Bryce McGowens. He posted 16.8 PPG with 5.2 RPG in 2021-22 and will be tough to replace. That said, Nebraska adds a couple of big transfers from the portal in Juwan Gary (Alabama) and Sam Griesel (North Dakota State). It’s probably not going to be a huge turnaround for the Huskers, but I like the team to show some improvement this season.
