Maryland Terrapins
Maryland opened up the year on a reasonable pace, going 12-6 over their first 18 games. The Terrapins are 6-2 since then, taking wins over Wisconsin, Nebraska, Indiana, Minnesota, Penn State and Purdue with losses otherwise to Purdue and Michigan State.
In the Purdue rematch on Thursday, the Terrapins trailed 28-25 going into the second half. Maryland surged on a 43-26 run from there and won it 68-54. Jahmir Young was the high man on 20 points and five rebounds in the victory.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Over on the Nebraska side, they opened the year on a .500 clip with a 10-10 record through 20 games. The Cornhuskers are 3-4 in their last seven with losses to Northwestern, Maryland, Illinois and Michigan along with wins over Penn State, Wisconsin and Rutgers.
Matched up against Rutgers on Tuesday, the Cornhuskers took a 40-35 edge into the second half. Nebraska kept their run going with a 42-37 advantage from there and won 82-72. Keisei Tominaga scored 22 and Sam Griesel doubled on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll stick with Maryland in this one. The Terrapins have been playing some great basketball against tough Big Ten teams lately, and they’re emerging as a top-level national squad. The Terrapins shot a nice 47.2 percent against Purdue, out-rebounding the Boilermakers 35-23 in their last outing. Maryland didn’t have much trouble the last time these teams met up on January 28, taking an 82-63 victory at Xfinity Center College Park. If the Terrapins can avoid the proverbial big-win hangover I think they’re in line for another dominant win/cover here.
