The Florida Atlantic Owls and the New Mexico Lobos meet Wednesday in college basketball action from the Pit. FAU is coming off a 13-10 overall campaign last season. The Owls landed in fourth place in the East Division with that record. As for New Mexico, they stumbled at 6-16 overall last year, finishing at the bottom of the Mountain West. Florida Atlantic had a tepid season in 2020-21, going 13-10 overall and 7-5 in Conference USA play. The Owls would finish in fourth place in the East Division of the standings, behind Western Kentucky, Old Dominion and Marshall.
FAU stumbled to a 3-5 record across their first eight outings in conference play last year, but then hit a four-game win streak to finish off the regular season. After a 76-70 win over UTEP, the Owls’ year came to an end with a 75-69 loss to LA Tech in the conference tournament.
Over on the New Mexico side, they had a rather forgettable campaign last season, with a 6-16 overall mark and a 2-15 finish in the Mountain West. The Lobos landed in last place with that effort, taking a significant step back from the previous season.
The Lobos started off the year well with three straight wins, but the team wouldn’t see consecutive victories after that. New Mexico finished the year on a 1-7 skid, ultimately falling 85-77 to Fresno State in the Mountain West Tournament.
PICK: I’m sticking with FAU, but probably staying away from this one. The Owls need a good bounce-back from a tepid campaign last season, and with the losses of Karlis Silins (10.5 PPG) and Jailyn Ingram (12.4 PPG) that won’t be easy. Still, head coach Dusty May has some interesting transfers like seven-footer Vladislav Goldin from Texas Tech and Bitumba Baruti from ECU. With a little luck I can see FAU climbing up a couple of spots in the standings this year. It’s got to start with a nice showing here, though. I think the Owls can do it.
