The SMU Mustangs and the New Mexico Lobos meet Sunday in college basketball action from the Pit. SMU is 8-3 so far and coming off a win over Dayton. As for New Mexico, they sit at 6-5 on the year. The Lobos lost to UTEP in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

SMU went 3-3 in their first half-dozen games this year, taking losses to Oregon, Missouri and LMU along the way. The Mustangs have been on a five-game win streak since, taking out Sam Houston, LA-Monroe, UNLV, Vanderbilt and Dayton in that quintet.

Matched up against Dayton in their last game, the Mustangs posted a 36-28 lead in the first half, then kept the Flyers at bay in the second for a 77-69 win. Kendric Davis led the team on 19 points with five assists and three rebounds.

Over on the New Mexico side, they went 5-3 over their first eight games with wins over Florida Atlantic, Grambling State, Montana State, Western NM and New Mexico State. The Lobos have gone 1-2 since with a win over Denver between losses to New Mexico State and UTEP.

In last weekend’s game versus UTEP, New Mexico was within three points at the break but faded in a 77-69 loss. Javonte Johnson put up 16 points with nine boards, and Gethro Muscadin added 14 points with six rebounds.

The Lobos are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 overall and 2-12 ATS in their last 14 Sunday games. The over is 12-4 in New Mexico’s last 16 overall.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 road games and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 Sunday games. SMU is 6-16-1 ATS in their last 23 overall.

PICK: I’m going to stay with SMU. The Mustangs posted a nice overall effort versus Dayton, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from 3-point range. SMU has scored well this year, with 70 or more points in 10 of 11 games.

As for the Lobos, they were solid on the boards versus UTEP in their last game but didn’t shoot particularly well. New Mexico has hit 69 or more points in each of their last four games however, so I like the Lobos to hang around here before an eventual SMU cover.
