Norfolk State Spartans

Norfolk State was sitting at 15-7 overall after 22 games this year. The Spartans managed a 5-3 finish with wins over Hampton, MD Eastern Shore, Delaware State, Morgan State and South Carolina State. The losses otherwise were to Coppin State, NC Central and Howard.

On Thursday in tournament activity versus Coppin State, Norfolk State was down 24-23 going into the break. The Spartans hit a 50-32 stretch in the second and won 73-56. Joe Bryant put up 25 points with three assists and four steals to lead the way.

NC Central Eagles

Over on the North Carolina Central side, they went .500 through their first 22 games with an 11-11 run. The Eagles closed strong with wins over Coppin State, Delaware State, MD Eastern Shore, Howard, Norfolk State and SC State to cap the regular season.

Matched up against Delaware State on Wednesday, the Eagles were up 36-24 going into the second half. NC Central hit a 53-35 run in the second and cruised to the win 89-59. Justin Wright topped the scoring on 23 points with seven boards.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably lean toward NC Central in this one. The Eagles didn’t have any issues with an overmatched Delaware State team on Wednesday, and that makes eight straight victories. NC Central has hit 68 or more points in seven of those games (66 in the other), so the offense is humming along nicely right now. As for Norfolk State, they’re just 2-3 in the last five games but they’ve still been scoring well. The second half in the Coppin State game was also a great effort. These teams have met twice already this year with the home team winning each time. First was a 77-71 Norfolk State win on January 30 and then a 76-75 win for NC Central on February 27. This one should be a competitive matchup as well; I like NC Central a little better but it’ll be close.
