Georgia Tech went 3-2 over their first five games, beating Clayton State, Georgia State and Northern Illinois. The Yellow Jackets posted a 3-1 run over their next four games with wins over North Alabama, Northeastern and Georgia.
In the Georgia matchup on Tuesday, the Yellow Jackets took a 39-34 deficit into the break. Georgia Tech scored 45 points from there in a 79-77 comeback win. Miles Kelly led the way on 17 points with five rebounds.
Over on the North Carolina side, they won their first five games this year over UNCW, Charleston, Gardner-Webb, James Madison and Portland. The next four were losses to Iowa State, Alabama, Indiana and Virginia Tech, though.
On Sunday versus Virginia Tech, the Tar Heels took a 37-27 deficit into the second half. North Carolina kept the pace from there but still lost 80-72. Pete Nance, RJ Davis and Caleb Love each posted a team-high 18 points.
PICK: I’ll probably stay with North Carolina here. The Tar Heels are a pretty solid team this year; trouble is, they’ve had to run through a gauntlet of top-tier squads (three ranked) over their last four outings. North Carolina has still been competitive in those matchups; only one was decided by more than eight points. As for Georgia Tech, it’ll be interesting to see how they perform here as well. The Jackets have scored well lately with 79 or more points in three of their last four. Ultimately however I don’t think they’ll keep a cover pace versus the Tar Heels.
