The UTEP Miners and the North Texas Mean Green meet Monday in college basketball action from UNT Coliseum. UTEP is currently 14-8 this year. The Miners beat Rice in their last game. As for North Texas, they’re sitting at 16-4 and coming off a win over UTSA. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
UTEP managed a shaky 8-8 run over their first 16 games this year, but the team has hit a six-game win streak since then. The victories have come versus Old Dominion, UTSA (twice), FAU, FIU and Rice during that stretch.
In the Rice matchup back on Saturday, the Miners were down by two at the break. UTEP hit a 44-40 run in the second half on the way to a nice 72-70 victory. Jamal Bieniemy put up 36 points with seven boards and four assists to lead the way.
Over on the North Texas side, they’ve lost just one game (to UAB) over the last 15 outings. The Green have beaten Middle Tennessee, Marshall, Western KY, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Southern Miss, LA Tech and UTSA in their last eight games.
Matched up against UTSA on Saturday, the Green took a 34-17 edge in the first half and a 35-28 run in the second for a 69-45 win. Abou Ousmane topped the team with his 17 points, six rebounds and one assist in 23 minutes of work.
The Green are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 27-12-1 ATS in their last 40 after an ATS win. The under is 13-5 in North Texas’ last 18 overall.
Meanwhile, the Miners are 2-6 ATS in the last eight after an ATS win and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 after a straight-up win. The under is 5-2 in UTEP’s last seven road games.
PICK: I’m going to try North Texas here. The Green haven’t exactly been scoring dynamos over this eight-game win streak; they’ve hit 70 points just once in that time. North Texas is getting it done with defense lately. They’ve allowed 65 or fewer points in all eight games.
As for the Miners, they’ve got a good enough offense to give North Texas a run for their proverbial money, so this should be a really good matchup. At home however, I think North Texas has the cover advantage.
