The Niagara Purple Eagles and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish meet Monday in college basketball action from Joyce Center. Niagara finished in fifth place among MAAC teams last season, posting a 16-15 overall record. As for Notre Dame, they’re coming off a disappointing 11-21 run in 2022-23 and finished near the bottom of the ACC standings. Niagara Purple Eagles

The Eagles improved by a couple of games last season record-wise, but didn’t end up making a ton of noise in the MAAC. Niagara went 16-15 overall with a 10-10 record in conference play, finishing in fifth place among the standings. After losing five of their final six regular-season games, the Eagles were eventually bounced by Iona in the MAAC Tournament 71-59.

Back for his fifth year as head coach, Greg Paulus gets a handful of impact players returning from last year’s team. Among them are Braxton Bayless (5.4 PPG), David Mitchell (4.2 PPG) and Lance Erving (3.9 PPG), all of whom averaged around 18 minutes per game a season ago. Their presence will help lessen the losses of transfers Noah Thomasson and Aaron Gray.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Over on the Notre Dame side, they got lost in a highly competitive ACC last year, taking a huge slide to a 11-21 overall record. The Irish’s dismal 3-17 record in conference games left them one spot out of the basement in the rankings, ahead of only Louisville. Notre Dame’s season ended with a first-round loss to Virginia Tech 67-64 in the conference tourney.

Notre Dame gets a fresh start this year with head coach Micah Shrewsberry, but there will still be some growing pains as the team tries to return to relevance. All of last year’s starters are gone, as well as a whopping 98.4 percent of its scoring. Shrewsberry plugged the holes with players who will hopefully stick around for a while, including sophomore Kebba Njie and freshman Markus Burton.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m going to go with Niagara. The Eagles have a bit of a veteran presence this year with Mitchell, Bayless and Erving on the roster. That should go a long way toward developing chemistry with the newcomers. The backcourt is looking good, however we’ll have to see how the bench depth and scoring pan out. For now it seems the team will take another step forward in 2023-24.

As for Notre Dame, it’s going to be a long climb back to relevance, and even if things go perfectly the team likely won’t return to the national tournament for three or four more years. Still, Shrewsberry is going about things the right way, building a basketball culture aimed at consistent success. Time will tell how well that goes, but for now there are some rough waters ahead.
