The Green Bay Phoenix and the Oakland Golden Grizzlies meet Saturday in college basketball action from Athletics Center O’rena. Green Bay is coming off a Thursday matchup versus Detroit. In that one the Phoenix lost by 17 points. As for Oakland, they played Milwaukee in their Thursday game. The Grizzlies would go on to take a blowout win. Green Bay went just 1-7 over their first eight games this year, beating only IUPUI on December 5. The Phoenix would hit a 1-4 stretch after that, beating UMKC and falling otherwise to Loyola IL, St. Thomas MN, Stanford and Oregon State.
In the Detroit matchup on Thursday, the Phoenix were outscored 37-26 by the break. Green Bay posted a 39-33 second-half deficit and fell 76-59. Leading scorer Zae Blake put up 14 points with five rebounds.
Over on the Oakland side, they got off to a miserable start as well, going 2-3 in their first five games. The Grizzlies would then hit a losing streak to LBSU, San Jose State, Missouri State, Cleveland State, Fort Wayne, Syracuse, Boise State and Michigan State.
On Thursday versus Milwaukee, Oakland was up by four points at halftime. The Grizzlies surged on a 40-22 run from there and took the win 83-61. Blake Lampman led the team on 20 points with three rebounds.
PICK: I’ll probably stick with Oakland. Also probably staying away. There’s not a ton of intrigue involved in this matchup, as both teams are struggling this year. That said, it should be a competitive game. Oakland posted an impressive win over a decent Milwaukee team in their last outing, especially in the second half. The Grizzlies hadn’t eclipsed 66 points for three straight games prior to that. As for Green Bay, they’ve been at 61 points or fewer in four straight outings. If Oakland gets going I don’t think the Phoenix will keep pace.
