The UT Arlington Mavericks and the Oklahoma State Cowboys meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Gallagher-Iba Arena. This will be the 2021-22 season opener for both teams. UT Arlington is coming off a .500 season last year, going 9-8 in Sun Belt play. As for Oklahoma State, they finished 21-9 last year and made it to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. UT Arlington managed to go 13-13 last year, with a 9-8 record in the Sun Belt. That effort left the Mavericks in third place in the West Division of the conference. UT Arlington matched up against Troy in the Sun Belt Tournament, falling 91-86 to end their campaign.
The good news for the Mavericks is that they finished the regular season on a decent run (albeit against limited conference competition). UT Arlington went 5-3 over their last eight games, with two of the losses coming to Texas State.
Over on the Oklahoma State side, their mark of 21-9 overall and 11-7 in the Big 12 last year wasn’t enough to squeeze into the top spots of a very competitive Big 12. The Cowboys would finish in fifth place amid the conference standings, behind Baylor, Kansas, Texas and West Virginia.
In the Big 12 Tournament, Oklahoma State beat West Virginia and Baylor before falling to Texas 91-86. The Cowboys earned an NCAA Tournament bid, taking out Liberty 69-60 in the First Round. OK State would then fall to Oregon State 80-70 in the next game.
The Mavericks are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five road games. The over is 5-1 in UT Arlington’s last six road games as well.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five at home. OK State is also 7-3 ATS in their last 10 on Tuesday.
PICK: I’m going to take Oklahoma State in this one. The Cowboys looked poised for a big NCAA Tournament run last year, but their hopes were dashed by a plucky Oregon State team. There’s reason to believe Oklahoma State will be back in the Big Dance again this year, even with Cade Cunningham off to the NBA. The Cowboys have some interesting talent incoming, and with the Mike Boynton/Avery Anderson combination returning there’s plenty of reason to be optimistic.
