The Texas-Arlington Mavericks and the Oklahoma State Cowboys meet Monday in college basketball action from Gallagher-Iba Arena. TX-Arlington is coming off a 11-18 overall effort last year, landing near the bottom of the Sun Belt standings. As for Oklahoma State, they had a disappointing .500 season in 2021-22 and finished sixth in the Big 12. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

TX-Arlington took a step back last year, failing to improve on the previous season’s record with a 11-18 overall mark and a 7-10 record in the Sun Belt. The Mavericks landed just three spots out of the basement in the standings, ahead of Georgia Southern, LA-Monroe and Little Rock.

TX-Arlington’s woes started early last season with a sketchy 4-7 record in non-conference play. The Mavericks had some early success against Sun Belt opponents but finished 2-6 over their final six games. TX-Arlington lost to Louisiana in the conference tourney.

Over on the Oklahoma State side, they faced a tough road last season in a Big 12 loaded with talent. The Cowboys finished 15-15 overall with an 8-10 record in the conference. That left OK State in sixth place behind Kansas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas and TCU.

Oklahoma State was 6-1 after their first seven games last year, but the team would fail to win more than two consecutive games for the rest of the year. The good news is that the Cowboys closed things out with a couple of victories over Iowa State and Texas Tech.

The Mavericks are 7-2 ATS in their last nine Monday games and the under is 4-0 in their last four overall. Oklahoma State is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five at home.

PICK: I’m probably sticking with Oklahoma State. Though it got lost in the immense talent of the Big 12 last season, the Cowboys’ defense was pretty darn good. OK State ranked fourth in the country in adjusted efficiency, and that helped the team eke out some close wins. That side of the ball should be strong again this year, with names like Kalib Boone and Moussa Cisse returning to the floor. Offense should be reasonable as well if Avery Anderson can get rolling, but we’ll have to see if the team improves from 3-point range (29.5 percent last year).
