Gardner-Webb lost four straight games to open up the season, falling versus Colorado State, Stephen F. Austin, North Carolina and Wofford. The Bulldogs went 2-2 in their next four with wins over NC A&T and Western Carolina.
Last weekend versus Chattanooga, the Bulldogs held a slim 39-38 lead going into the second half. Gardner-Webb was outscored 44-32 from there and lost 82-71. Both Julien Soumaoro and DQ Nicholas scored 14 points apiece.
Over on the Old Dominion side, they alternated wins with losses over their first eight games. The losses in that time came to Drexel, Virginia Tech, Davidson and Charleston. The Monarchs have since beaten Norfolk State and William & Mary.
In the William & Mary game on Wednesday, the Monarchs were up 26-24 by halftime. Old Dominion hit a 46-38 run in the second half and won it 72-62. Derrick Williams was the top team scorer with 11 points and five rebounds.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Old Dominion. The Monarchs have been a mixed bag so far this year, but they can score pretty well when the matchup is right. Old Dominion has hit 68 or more points in all six of their victories, so if they can get to that threshold here (which they should) the Monarchs should be in good shape cover-wise. As for Gardner-Webb, they’ve hit 71 points in consecutive outings. The Bulldogs only hit that mark once in the six previous games, though. Should be an interesting game, but ODU should have the inside track here.
