The George Mason Patriots and the Old Dominion Monarchs meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Ted Constant Convocation Center. George Mason is 7-4 on the year so far. The Patriots beat Tulane in their last game. As for Old Dominion, they’re currently 7-4 as well following a win over Gardner-Webb. George Mason managed to win just two of their first six games this year, beating only Longwood and American. The Patriots are 5-0 since then, beating Queens NC, Hofstra, Toledo, MD Eastern Shore and Tulane.
On Saturday versus Tulane, the Patriots were down 24-22 at the break. George Mason scored 40 more points in the second half to power out the comeback win 62-56. Victor Bailey led the way on 19 points with three boards.
Over on the Old Dominion side, they were 3-3 over their first six games, taking wins over MD Eastern Shore, VA Wesleyan and Furman. The Monarchs are 4-1 since then with wins over East Carolina, Norfolk State, William & Mary and Gardner-Webb.
Back on December 10 versus Gardner-Webb, the Monarchs held a 29-26 lead at the break. ODU was outscored 17-15 during a weird second half but hung on for the 44-43 win. Mekhi Long was the only double-digit team scorer with 12 points and nine boards.
PICK: I’m going to take George Mason. The Patriots are rolling along nicely on this five-game win streak, and they took out a decent Tulane team in their last matchup. George Mason shot 46.3 percent for the floor with 40 rebounds and 20 assists in that one. The Patriots have been scoring well also, with 67 or more points in five of the last six games. As for Old Dominion, they’ve won three straight games themselves despite struggling against a not-so-good Gardner-Webb team in their last outing. I like the Monarchs to hang around for most of the game here with George Mason eventually powering out the cover.
